Necessary reforms should be brought to admission process at public universities to make it free of hassle for the admission seekers, observed speakers at a workshop on Tuesday.
An acceptable and credible admission process should be developed for entry at the tertiary level education also to check huge wastage of time and money, they said.
The workshop titled ‘Report of Admission System for Undergraduate Course in Public Universities’ was held at the University Grants Commission auditorium in the city.
Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid spoke at the programme as chief guest while education secretary Kamal Abdul
Naser Chowdhury was present as a special guest with UGC chairman Prof AK Azad Chowdhury in the chair.
UGC member Prof M Muhibur Rahman presented the keynote paper at the workshop.
Nahid said reforms to the admission process at the tertiary level education were the need of the hour as huge time and money was wasted in the present admission process.
He called upon the country’s leading academicians to make the process easier and hassle-free for the admission seekers.
The education minister also observed that students are getting dependent on coaching centres because of the existing admission system.
The UGC chairman said selection process to get the students admitted should be made easier to get rid of the additional burden of examination.
UGC members Prof Atful Hye Shibly, Prof Mohammad Mohabbat Khan, Prof Abul Hashem and Prof M Akhtar Hossain, Dhaka University vice-chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique, Rajshahi University VC Prof Abdus Sobhan, Buet VC Prof SM Nazrul Islam, Jahangirnagar University VC Dr Anwar Hossain and Prof Muhammad Zafar Iqbal of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology were, among others, present on the occasion.
