SUST students block road for construction of speed-breakers

Staff Correspondent . Sylhet

Students of the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology on Sunday blocked the Sylhet-Sunamganj Road for two hours, demanding construction of speed-breakers on the road in front of the university main entrance.
The students withdrew the blockade from the road at around 2:00pm after the Sylhet Roads and Highways Department authorities assured them of constructing the speed-breakers by Monday evening.
Local sources said several hundred students started demonstrating putting barricade on Sylhet-Sunamganj Road in front of the SUST main entrance at Akhalia in the city at noon in demand of immediate construction speed breakers on the road.
Informed, the university authorities asked the agitating students to withdraw their blockade and told them that they would look in the matter.
But the students were not convinced and vowed that they would continue their demonstration until their demand was met, the campus sources said.
Hundreds of vehicles at both ends of the road remained stranded because of the blockade, causing serious sufferings to the passengers.
Later, SRHD chief executive engineer Abu Ehtesham Rashed rushed to the office of SUST proctor and convinced the students to withdraw their road blockade after assuring them of installing speed-breakers in front of the university entrance by Monday evening.
SUST proctor Himadri Sekhar Roy told New Age that the RHD officials assured the students of constructing speed-breakers and the students were convinced by the assurance.
