Begging – a curse for the society!

The number of beggars is increasing at an alarming rate in the city. Though the beggars do not have any social status, their status weakens the country’s status. I have difficulty understanding why the number of beggars is increasing. If poverty is the reason behind it, then why are so many of the beggars often seen in perfect health?  Unfortunately, as we have realized recently, it is now not only for the poor or injured people, but is a profession that many choose to be in.
The system and style of begging is another astonishing matter. The majority of the beggars beg in disguise of pious persons. It seems quite obvious that the beggars believe that if they look like perfect believers of God, then they may get money easily. They are very wrong in thinking such. The Prophet of Islam himself would loath the culture of begging. Through anecdotes of our Prophet and other religious figures, and their attitude towards begging, we know quite well that Islam does not preach such beliefs.
Those who use religion as a ruse or excuse to beg should not do so. The government and the Non Government Organizations can steadily take the step to remove the culture of begging from our country. Especially microcredit organizations can come forward to solve this problem.
At this point, I would like to quote Nelson Mandela, who said, ‘Poverty is not an accident. Like slavery and apartheid, it is manmade and can be removed by the actions of human beings.’ I agree with him - it can be removed. It just needs our unified support.
