Maize gives a boost to rural economy
Zakir Hossain . Rangpur

CULTIVATION of maize on the sandy lands in char areas across eight northern districts has not only increased the earnings of thousands of marginal farmers and but also lifted them from the mire of grinding poverty.
These barren lands beside the rivers Teesta and Dharla remained uncultivated even a few years ago. At the initial stage, farmers found no prospect of growing any crop on these sandy lands in Rangpur, Kurigram, Nilphamari, Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat, Dinajpur, Thakurgaon and Panchagarh. But cultivation of maize on these sterile lands by some enthusiastic farmers on an experimental basis a few years ago dramatically changed their attitude.
Good harvest of maize encouraged the farmers to take to its cultivation on a wide scale on the low lying char areas along the rivers in these districts. This crop is now grown on 54 thousand of hectares of land in these districts. These eight districts now account for more than 50 per cent of the total production of maize in the country.
With the expansion of the booming poultry farming in the country the area of land under maize cultivation is likely to increase further in this region. Maize is the main poultry feed in our country, DAE officials said.
Maize cultivation is less expensive compared to boro as the former does not need irrigation water. Moreover, maize is not so much exposed to the freak of nature such as flood, drought and storm, according to farmers.
Abder Hossain, a farmer of Char Mornea under Gangachara upazila in Rangpur, said he cultivated maize on one hectare of land last year and got a yield of 95 maunds (one maund equals to 37-3242kg) spending Tk 8,000. He earned Tk 33,250 by selling maize.
Many maize growers also spoke of advantage of maize cultivation on barren lands.
In Nilphamari, maize is gradually replacing tobacco at many places as the farmers found maize cultivation more lucrative.
In Rangpur, the farmers are switching over to the maize farming in increasing number. The area under maize cultivation in this district rose to 16,670 hectares this year from 7,200 hectares last year. Rajshahi Krishhi Unnayan Bank and several NGOs are offering loan to the maize growers on easy terms.
Mustafa Azad Chowdhury, president, Rangpur Chamber of Commerce and Industries, said maize farming on a large scale has brightened the prospect of establishing poultry feed industry in the district. Setting up of poultry feed industry would create job opportunities for a large number of rural youths, he opined.
