Literacy for all
still elusive

A half of people aged 7 years
and above illiterate

Literacy for all remains elusive as at least a half of the people aged seven years and above are still illiterate, according to experts. People in rural areas lag behind people living in urban areas in literacy rate and so do the females in comparison with the males. In a faulty primary education system, the government and most of the non-governmental organisations are just chalking up the number of ‘literate’ people without improving the quality and effectiveness of literacy, they said....[ + ]

ANTHRAX INFECTION
76 more cases detected in Satkhira, Lalmonirhat

Seventy-six more cases of anthrax infection have been detected in Lalmonirhat and Satkhira, taking to 413 the total number of such cases in seven districts. 2.3 lakh BO accounts opened in 2 months

Around 2.3 lakh new beneficiary owners’ accounts were opened in the first two months of the current financial year contributing to the swelling of an already over-heated market amid a huge gap in demand and supply of shares. With an increasing number of investors crowding the stock market everyday hoping to make quick profits, the number of BO account holders reached 27,97,909 on Monday from 25,61,835 on June 30 when the 2009-2010 financial year ended, according to Central Depository Bangladesh Limited...

July export posts 26pc growth

The country’s merchandise shipments saw more than 26 per cent growth in July marking a good beginning for exports in the current fiscal year compared to the similar period of the last fiscal which experienced a negative growth.
